Zanzibar, Tanzania
Rarely anyone in Africa will introduce themselves by their given name. Along our travels, we've met Mr. Innocent, Gift, Vegemite, Kevin Costner, Three Wisemen, Baby Giraffe, Vin Diesel and those are just a few of our favorites.
We left Chobie (our truck) on the mainland and our next stop with Acacia Africa was a little R&R on Zanzibar, an island off of Tanzania. In Zanzibar, we met "Allie G". He was our tour guide for the Spice Plantation and like the Sacha Baron Cohen character, he was quite the entertainer!
Zanzibar was also the center for slave trading in Eastern Africa during the 1800's. After learning about spices and touring the plantation, we headed to a museum and church in Stone Town, both of which sit on the site of the old slave market. We're not one for tours, but we found this to be both informative and very eye-opening.
We then made our way through a maze of alleyways to an evening food market along the water where vendors had names like Mr. Chocolate, Mr. Pizza, and Mr. Smoothie. We watched the sunset as local boys jumped from the promenade into the water.
The beach has been calling Hailey's name since the moment we stepped foot in Africa. So after a visit to Zanzibar Coffee House, we made our way up North.
We arrived at Kendwa Beach, where we would spend the next FOUR days, and Hailey was in full vacation mode.
